Luthier

My latest hobby has been trying to build a guitar.  Its just about there, but with all the baby stuff going on building cribs, changing tables and decorating Ava's new room its been hard to focus on the guitar.  But here are some pictures of the current status.

I hope you have a broadband connection.  These pictures are high quality since I did not have a chance to manage them and make them more web friendly.

If your on dial up may I suggest you get broadband.  You only live once and you can't take all that money with you so you mind as well fork over the couple extra bucks a month.

Here are the latest pictures of the guitar.  Its really in the home stretch.  I am waiting on the tapered bridge reamer to show up so I can mount the bridge and hear the first sounds.  If it sounds good I will French  polish the whole thing.

The heel cap is also missing.  I am going to make it out of bloodwood to match the binding.  I have learned a lot from the experience.  There is no better way to learn than from doing it.  All in all I am very happy with the way this guitar is turning out.

The next guitar I make will be a cutaway, and I think I am going to cheat on the side bending by using a fox bender.  I got the plans from Luthiers Mercantile.  The plans are short on the instruction but I think I can get it to work.

Well I got the materials to build a second guitar.  Click here to find out more about it !

Guitar sides in form

After the bending of the sides pressure is applied by a turn buckle and a set shoes to keep the sides in the form.

Go Bar Deck

Here pressure is applied to the spruce barcing using a go bar deck. I still need to work on it a little bit since its a little on the flimsy side.

Bear Claw Spruce

The guitar top is cut to an approximate shape and the green abalone rosette is put in using a fly cutter and a drill press.

Abalone, here is a close up.

Spruce Bracing

Here is the spruce bracing already cut and ready to be dimensioned and glued onto the patern drawn on the back of the guitar top.

Back Of The Top

Here is the bracing drawn on the back of the top.
